Party: Are We Depressed or Perverse?

The Critical Theory Club (https://www.facebook.com/criticaltheoryclub) invites you to join us as we welcome Dr. Heather Lukes, from Occidental College!

Lukes will be presenting a talk entitled "Are We Depressed or Perverse?: Two Ways of Thinking Feeling in the Information Age"

Synopsis:

Recent media theorists argue that neoliberal globalization and information technology have changed the way “first world” subjects think and feel. Hailing from the Italian “Autonomist” tradition, Franco “Bifo” Berardi claims that depression is the leading disability in the world because it is the necessary outcome of “semiocapitalism,” which afflicts all subjects with an unsustainable degree of risk and panic. Lacanian psychoanalytic thinkers Slavoj Zizek and Jodi Dean hold that the immediacy of “communicative capitalism” makes us all perverts, who simply “get off” by pointing and clicking instead of doing the harder work that comes from desiring a better world. Are depression or perversion really the only choices? This talk will explicate these two positions and explore other options.

H. N. Lukes is an assistant professor in the department of Critical Theory and Social Justice at Occidental College.

We are very excited for this event and welcome all to attend!
