Jerrold Dubyk guides this spring afternoon jazz concert. The concert features music drawn from the origins of the jazz quartet and rearranged for jazz orchestra.
The first set features the YSJO on John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", arranged by Wynton Marsalis. In a time of what kind of world we are currently living in, the YSJO presents this music as a reminder of Coltrane's long term vision of what is ultimately needed.
The second set features all original music from Jerrold Dubyk. With music coming from his fourth album as a leader entitled "Something" and his third "Invitations", the arrangements you hear come from his wish of having others disassemble his music and put it all back together for jazz orchestra - much like what Marsalis did to Coltrane's recording of "A Love Supreme"
Five arrangers from the local and international community have rearranged Jerrold’s music for this concert.
Local arrangers Allan Gilliland (composer/arranger/trumpet) winner of two Western Canadian Music Awards and appearances at Carnegie Hall) and Craig Brenan (trombone/composer/arranger, studies and performances with Bob Brookmeyer and recipient of the Tommy Banks Award) shape the music on two arrangements.
Venturing south of the border, a contribution from
Canadian expatriate Earl MacDonald (currently in Connecticut - past musical arranger for Maynard Ferguson, two time Juno Nominee and jazz pianist) is given.
Internationally, Florian Ross (pianist and studies with Bob Brookmeyer, Kenny Werner, Vince Mendoza) contributes his versions of Jerrold's music for this gig. He is a winner of the coveted 1st prize in the Danish Radio Big Band International Thad Jones Competition and the prestigious WDR Jazz prize for composition.
Rounding out the arrangers is Gil Goldstein. For nearly four decades, the pianist/producer/arranger has drawn the musical blueprint for some of the most prominent artists in jazz – and in so doing, has become a highly influential figure in his own right. Gil’s prominence comes through his reconstructed orchestrations for Miles Davis’ Miles Davis and Quincy Jones Play the Music of Gil Evans, which won a Grammy Award in 1993. In addition, he
produced and arranged Michael Brecker’s last two recordings – Wide Angles (2003) and Pilgrimage (2007) – both of which also scored Grammys.
Jerrold is grateful to share the stage with a group of handpicked stellar #yegjazz musicians. With their artistry and care into all that they do, each individual is an absolute cornerstone in putting this music together.
