Party: Nighthawks: The Big One

The next NIGHTHAWKS BIG ONE is in collaboration with Walthamstow Assembly Hall, who have invited special guest John Thomas, blues expert and author of 'Kalamazoo Gals', to discuss his latest project and to showcase the famous Gibson Banner guitar.

During the years of World War Two, manufacture of the Gibson Banner Guitar was carried out almost exclusively by women, a fact obscured by the company for many years due to potential commercial implications but which, it is argued, gave the guitar a unique sound, unreproducible ever since. 'Kalamazoo Gals' is the story of the brilliant women who made the guitars, and author John Thomas will be showcasing the guitar at Walthamstow Assembly Hall as a prelude to our next Nighthawks event.

This performance dovetails with current research into Walthamstow Assembly Hall itself, also built during the war and as such, primarily the work of the women of London. Nighthawks and WAH are delighted to welcome you to sample the delights of this beautiful venue and its reputedly unique acoustic, and invite you to answer the question: did the wartime women have a magic touch?

Assisting your decision will be live music from the fabulous 11-piece swing band 9:20 DELUXE, as well as DJs of the finest swing, blues, jazz and R&B music from the inter- and post-war years

Join us, dress up and dance in this Art Deco ballroom, another one of London's architectural gems!
