Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse at Royal Sonesta New Orleans presents the 7th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Jazz Awards honoring individuals who have contributed to enriching the community, advancing cultural awareness through music and art, and furthering economic opportunity while adhering to the principals of non-violence.
2016 Award recipients:
• Phyllis Landrieu, Co-Founder, President and CEO, Childhood & Family Learning Foundation; Co-Founder, Mahalia Jackson Early Childhood Center and Elementary School; Member of the Louisiana Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Coalition
• Aesha Rasheed, Editor, New Orleans’ Parents’ Guide to Public Schools
• “Deacon” John More, Musician/Entertainer
• Irma Thomas, “Soul Queen of New Orleans”
Kent Jordan, Lusher Charter School Music Department Head, will be honored with this year’s Germaine Bazzle Award.
Immediately following the ceremony, the public is invited to join the honorees for a special command performance, featuring the renowned Jazz vocalist Germaine Bazzle, beginning promptly at 8 p.m.
