A Night with Kulu.
Kulu is Hong Kong’s undisputed ‘Godfather of DJ-ing’ in Hong Kong. His encyclopedic knowledge of music and laid-back, unpretentious yet slightly mysterious demeanor ensure he is well respected by all who know him. His funky, eclectic style makes him instantly recognizable as a Hong Kong icon.
Ever since the 1960’s when he bought his first jazz record, he was instantly hooked – it was Stan Getz’s Bossa-Nova Jazz sound that inspired Kulu, thereafter began digging deeper into the roots of Jazz. He quickly discovered the ‘Blue Note’ record label, which lit the fire that kindled his passion for Jazz and his desire to one day own his own Jazz Club.
The mid 1960’s saw Kulu depart Hong Kong’s shores for London to pursue further education as a graphic designer. This did not turn out to be his true calling and after dropping out of university, he ended up living in La Mola, a small town on the tiny but beautiful island of Formantera nestled next to Ibiza, Spain. He spent his time here in pursuit of ‘spiritual refinement’. During this period, he discovered the art of imagery.
On his return to London, he worked as a successful photographer in the fashion and advertising industry.
He quickly established himself as one of the leading photographers in 1960’s ‘swinging London’, working with many well-known brands of the day including ELLE Magazine, Cartier, Chrysalis Records and the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi. Kulu also photographed many of the leading Jazz legends of the day including Dizzie Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Chet Baker, Roland Kirk and Elvin Jones.
His music career only started in the mid 70’s when he used to host regular parties at his photography studio including DJ’s playing the sounds of Soul, Funk and Jazz. This is where his DJ career started almost by accident. The DJ who was supposed to play didn’t make it back from India. Not wanting to disappoint his guests, he jumped behind the decks. A Career spanning 4 decades was born.
Kulu continued to be extremely successful as a photographer shooting the likes of Boy George, Bananarama and Kim Wilde. But the commercial focus of the industry wasn’t for him.
In 1995, he decided to pack it up and a follow his life long dream - running and booking a Jazz Club in Edinburgh. He brought many Acid-Jazz, Soul, Funk, Drum & Bass and Hip-Hop acts to the venue as well as playing himself. He became so loved as ‘Henry’s Bar’ they offered him shares in the venue. It is now one of the UK’s top music venues.
1999 saw the return of Kulu to his homeland and was instantly in demand. Having carved a niche out for himself in top clubs such Jazz Club, Club 97 and the newly opened Kee Club. He also formed a group called the ‘ultra lounge’ a collective of talents musicians, DJ’s and vocalists.
He continues to inspire young DJ Jedi's in Hong Kong. He is a hero that deserves every bit of praise he gets. This is a night NOT to be missed!
